What Is FootGolf?

FootGolf is exactly what it sounds like — it’s a variation of golf played with soccer balls.

Players aim to get a soccer ball into a larger, FootGolf cup in as few shots as possible, but instead of swinging a club, they’re kicking the ball with their feet. Just like traditional golf, FootGolf can be played over 9 or 18 holes. In fact, FootGolf is integrated into our standard course, so you’ll face the same hazards and tee off from the same tee boxes as golfers.

FootGolf uses a size 5 soccer ball shot into a 21” cup. It’s otherwise so similar to conventional golf that you may share the course with standard golfers ahead of or behind you.

The rules of FootGolf aren’t complicated, but there are some guidelines to know. We recommend consulting the American FootGolf Federation to brush up on the rules. Our staff is also happy to answer your questions to get you started.

What Do You Need to Play FootGolf?

One of the great things about FootGolf is that you don’t need any special equipment to get started. You just need a soccer ball – bring your own or grab one from our clubhouse at no additional charge!

If you can kick a soccer ball, you can play FootGolf! No prior experience or specialized athletic skills are required.

Soccer cleats are prohibited on the course. Instead, simply wear a comfortable pair of athletic shoes. Players can wear formal golf attire or soccer attire—we suggest dressing comfortably yet tastefully. Cut-off shorts, tank tops, and sleeveless shirts are not permitted.
FootGolf is played in groups of 2-6 players. However, solo players are welcome to visit our course, but they may be paired with a group. Playtime is about 45-60 minutes for 9 holes of play.

FootGolf FAQ’s

There are now over 120 accredited golf courses in the United States that offer FootGolf and Stonehedge Golf Course was the first FootGolf course to open in Vermont (since 2014)!

Absolutely!  In fact, the American FootGolf League (AFGL) actually requires that FootGolf courses only be established on operating golf courses and, like many other FootGolf courses around the country (and world), the goal is to fully integrate the two sports. It's entirely possible that a group of FootGolfers could be playing ahead of or behind a group of standard golfers.

Yes, we suggest booking a tee time online (make that a link to the reservation page) or by calling the clubhouse (802.773.2666).  We can accept tee times up to 14 days in advance!

Not much...  Unlike the game of golf where the equipment can get a little pricy, the only thing you need to play FootGolf is a size 5 soccer ball, a pair of comfortable shoes (NO SOCCER/ATHLETIC CLEATS ARE ALLOWED ON THE COURSE!!!) and an appetite for fun!  And for those that don’t have a soccer ball, Stonehedge has size 5 soccer balls available for rental.

The maximum group size for golf is 4, but with the pace of FootGolf being slightly faster than golf, Stonehedge will allow FootGolf groups of 2-6 players.  While solo FootGolfers are also welcome to play Stonehedge, single players may be asked  to join with another group of players to limit contention on the course.  Who needs Match.com?!?!

Here are the standard AGFL FootGolf rules/regulations:

  • Make sure your ball is easy to identify and differentiate from others in your group or on the course.
  • Review the score card and wait for your turn. Make sure your kick will not interfere with other players.
  • You can kick your tee shot from any position on the tee box up to two meters (6 feet) behind the tee markers.
  • The ball must be played in a single movement. You are not allowed to push the ball with the top or bottom of your foot.
  • The ball must come completely to rest before playing your next shot.  It is not legal to stop the ball from rolling (even when/if wind-aided).
  • Play the ball from where it lies – you are not allowed to move the ball.
